Critical Thinking?

So we learned about Critical Thinking in 1 of my classes, which I would have to say I am not very good at. However, the point is to learn the concepts and can get better at it.

For instance, there are Richard Paul and Linder Elder's Standards of Thinking. These are the principles applied to checking the quality of reasoning about an issue and consist of:
  • clarity
  • accuracy
  • precision
  • relevance
  • depth
  • breadth
  • logicalness
  • significance
  • fairness

There also Gerald Nosich’s Elements of Reasoning. These are tools to use when we reflect on our thinking and consist of:

  • purpose
  • question at issue
  • assumptions
  • implications and consequences
  • information
  • concepts
  • conclusions
  • point of view
  • context
  • alternatives

You probably have no idea what I am talking about so I leave you with this situation: An elderly coworker of yours is out climbing in the mountains with you and falls and gets very hurt. His last dying wish is delivered to you as "I have $1 million dollars in my safe at home, clean, legal, and taxes paid. Nobody knows about this money but you. I don't even have a written will but here is what I want you to do with it. I was secretly involved with this militia all these years and want this money to be donated anonimously to the militia." He dies. You then see 2 different articles in the newspaper: 1. Children's Hospital Needs $1 Million Dollars Tomorrow or Doors Will Close and Treatment Will End. 2. Health Clinics Bombed, Militia is Suspected to be Involved. What do you do with the $1 million dollars?

361st New Thing - Tried on Wedding Dresses

I didn't have time to post the last night, therefore I'm posting this late as this occurred yesterday (Mon 10/15/12). My friend and I went to David's Bridal last night to try on some wedding dresses. I looked on their website a few months ago to get a feel of the type of dresses I like. There are 6 styles: Classic & Traditional, Chic & Modern, Elegant & Luxurious, Glamorous & Dramatic, Destination, and Reception. I like Classic & Traditional the best. There are 5 silhouettes to choose from: A-Line, Ball Gown, Mermaid/Trumpet, Sheath, and Short. I like A-Line the best. I'm considering straps or strapless. It took about 1.5 hours to try on 5 dresses. I liked 2 of the dresses I tried on, both were under $350. My goal is to find one under $200. Here is one of the 'favorites' that I saw online. It is hard to tell if I would or wouldn't like it on myself. What did you do today?

271st New Thing - Visited the Space Needle

I was on vacation so I didn't have time to post the last few nights, therefore I'm posting this late as this occurred 1 day ago   (Tues 7/17/12).   We were in the northwest in the Washington State area for a few days so Matt and my 2 Chicago friends were in Seattle and up the Space Needle yesterday. The Space Needle is a tower in Seattle, Washington and is a major landmark of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It was built for the 1962 World's Fair, during which time nearly 20,000 people a day used the elevators, with over 2.3 million visitors in all for the World Fair. The Space Needle is 605 feet high at its highest point and 138 feet wide at its widest point and weighs 9,550 tons. It is built to withstand winds of up to 200 mph and earthquakes of up to 9.1 magnitude. The tower also has 25 lightning rods on its roof to prevent lightning damage. The Space Needle features an observation deck at 520 feet, and a gift shop with the rotating SkyCity resta...
