Last week, I went to Bed Bath & Beyond and bought a steamer. I bought a Joseph Joseph Lotus Non-Scratch Folding Steamer Basket. I believe I bought it for $9.99 at BB&B AND had a 20% off coupon so it was a really good deal compared to the other $50 stainless steel steamers at the store. This particular steamer features high-quality polypropylene, self-adjusting sides, heat-resistant silicone feet, and a silicone finger guard.
Steaming vegetables for cooking, instead of boiling, helps the vegetables retain their vitamin and mineral content. When vegetables are boiled, the vitamins and minerals leach into the water and are then thrown away. Steamed vegetables also hold their shape better than if boiled or prepared by another method. Steamers can be used for foods other than vegetables, with fish and shellfish being popular for cooking using a steamer. Almost any vegetable can be steamed to eating perfection. Common steamed vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, green beans, peas and mushrooms. I steamed broccoli tonight in about 1 inch of boiling water for 10 minutes. I thought the broccoli tasted fresh and great!
