I was on vacation so I didn't have time to post the last few nights, therefore I'm posting this late as this occurred 2 days ago (Wed 8/22/12).
We were in the southeast in the Jacksonville Florida area (Amelia Island) for a few days. First, we ate our free breakfast at the Amelia Hotel. Then we walked across the street to Fernandina Beach. Fernandina Beach is the county seat of Nassau County in the state of Florida, on Amelia Island. The area was 1st inhabited by the Timucuan Indian tribe. Known as the "Isle of 8 Flags", it has had the flags of the following nations flown over it since 1562: France, Spain, Great Britain, Spain, the Patriots of Amelia Island, the Green Cross of Florida, Mexico, the Confederate States of America, and the United States. It is the only municipality in the United States that has flown 8 different national flags. According to the 2010 census, the city population was 11,487. It is notable for its Victorian houses festooned in gingerbread trim and is also considered the birthplace of the modern shrimping industry.
Next we had a drink downtown Fernandina Beach at The Palace Saloon, in the Prescott Building, the oldest bar in Florida, opened 1878. According to local lore, it was the last bar in Florida to close on the eve of Prohibition. A shrewd business man, Hirth stored up for a last hurrah selling till midnight and grossing $60,000 in a single day. Residents and visitors flock there to enjoy the authentic cocktails and atmosphere. Finally, we went to Shucker's Oyster Bar for dinner (Oysters, Grouper, Scallops, Conch Fritters, Fried Okra, cole slaw, hush puppies, and fries). What an awesome and amazing day out on the water in the southeast!
