109th New Thing - Saw Noodles & Co's CEO Speak

As an alumni of DU, I'm invited to attend events on campus. Tonight, was Daniels College of Business Voices of Experience speaker series event with Kevin Reddy, CEO of Noodles & Company. The Daniels speaker series brings in CEOs and significant leaders to share the lessons learned from their triumphs, mistakes, and decisions as they navigated through their leadership careers. Noodles & Co is a fast casual restaurant chain that first started in Denver CO in the Cherry Creek Neighborhood. The pasta dishes are inspired by American, Mediterranean, and Asian influences. They serve salads, soups, and sandwiches. They are also testing appetizers and desserts. Noodles & Co has won several business and industry awards including Parents magazine 'Parents 10 Best Restaurant Chains', Nation's Restaurant News 'Second 100: Top 5 Chains in Sales and Growth', and Health magazine 'America's Healthiest Fast Food Restaurants'.

Reddy has been CEO of Noodles & Co since May 2006. He has more than 20 years experience working for 2 of the restaurant industry’s most successful concepts (McDonald's and Chipotle). During his tenure at Noodles, the company has more than doubled in size. He’s active in the community and has served or currently serves on various nonprofit and for-profit boards of directors including the executive advisory board to the Daniels College of Business at the University of Denver. Kevin Reddy has won several business and industry awards including Ernst & Young 'Rocky Mountain Entrepreneur of the Year Award Winner', Restaurant Business magazine 'Entrepreneur of the Year', ColoradoBiz magazine 'CEO of the Year Finalist'.

I've eaten at Noodles & Co a number of times and enjoy it. I like the fresh cooked pasta and the variety of flavors to choose from. Listening to Kevin Reddy for an hour and a half and looking at his slide show of pasta sure did make me hungry!

271st New Thing - Visited the Space Needle

I was on vacation so I didn't have time to post the last few nights, therefore I'm posting this late as this occurred 1 day ago   (Tues 7/17/12).   We were in the northwest in the Washington State area for a few days so Matt and my 2 Chicago friends were in Seattle and up the Space Needle yesterday. The Space Needle is a tower in Seattle, Washington and is a major landmark of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It was built for the 1962 World's Fair, during which time nearly 20,000 people a day used the elevators, with over 2.3 million visitors in all for the World Fair. The Space Needle is 605 feet high at its highest point and 138 feet wide at its widest point and weighs 9,550 tons. It is built to withstand winds of up to 200 mph and earthquakes of up to 9.1 magnitude. The tower also has 25 lightning rods on its roof to prevent lightning damage. The Space Needle features an observation deck at 520 feet, and a gift shop with the rotating SkyCity resta...

39th New Thing – Donated $1 to Books For Africa

I read an Oprah.com article, 16 Ways to Make an Incredible Impact With Less Than $15 , recently about 16 different organizations you can donate to for as low as a $1 donation or up to a $15. Since it is the holiday season of giving, I decided to donate $1 to Books For Africa . Supposedly $1 will provide 2 books shipped to a classroom in Africa. Access to an education is one of the only opportunities young people have to end the cycle of poverty and attain a better quality of life than previous generations. Books For Africa works to help children who otherwise would not attend school by supplying educational materials to reduce or eliminate education costs. In the wake of Wyclef's accusations (1/3 of $16 million raised went to the charity), I was a little leery of donating but if Oprah says it is a reliable organization, it must be!
