348th New Thing - Ate a Runza

One of Matt's employees had a Runza party this past weekend. We were unable to attend but he was nice enough to save us 2 Runzas and freeze them for us. We reheated them tonight for dinner. A runza (also called a bierock, fleischkuche or Kraut Pirok) is a yeast dough bread pocket with a filling consisting of beef, pork, cabbage or sauerkraut, onions, and seasonings. They are baked in various shapes such as a half-moon, rectangle, round, square, or triangle. The runza was very tasty. I feel like I've had something similar but could've quite figure it out.

The runza sandwich originated in Russia during the 1800s and spread to Germany before appearing in the United States. The termbierock comes from the Russian word pirogi or pirozhki and is the term for any food consisting of a savory filling stuffed dough. The recipe was passed down from generation to generation and is available throughout the Americas, particularly Argentina and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba. The recipe was spread throughout the United States by the Volga Germans and can be found in North and South Dakota, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Kansas and Nebraska. The term "runza" is registered as a trademark in the United States by Nebraska-based Runza Restaurants

271st New Thing - Visited the Space Needle

I was on vacation so I didn't have time to post the last few nights, therefore I'm posting this late as this occurred 1 day ago   (Tues 7/17/12).   We were in the northwest in the Washington State area for a few days so Matt and my 2 Chicago friends were in Seattle and up the Space Needle yesterday. The Space Needle is a tower in Seattle, Washington and is a major landmark of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It was built for the 1962 World's Fair, during which time nearly 20,000 people a day used the elevators, with over 2.3 million visitors in all for the World Fair. The Space Needle is 605 feet high at its highest point and 138 feet wide at its widest point and weighs 9,550 tons. It is built to withstand winds of up to 200 mph and earthquakes of up to 9.1 magnitude. The tower also has 25 lightning rods on its roof to prevent lightning damage.
