32nd New Thing – Took Apart My Cell Phone

If you haven’t already heard me complain about how my cell phone broke, you are going to now. Last Tuesday 11/15/11, I was heading out to work. As I got in my car, my LG Ally (covered with a rubber protective case) slipped out of my bag and drop to the ground (about 2 feet). I did not realize it fell out so I drove away. A couple minutes later, I realized I did not have my cell phone with me so I went back to my apartment to look for it. It wasn't inside so I retraced my steps. It was still sitting in my parking spot without a scratch on it. What a relief I thought to myself.  There was a green light blinking on it, signifying I had a message. However, when I tried to turn it on it did not come on. I then realized the phone worked but the screen did not. I went to the Verizon Wireless Store after work and then informed me the LCD screen was shot and it was $90 for a new part + labor. I could also buy a new phone for $400+ or use an old phone until my contract was up February 15 2012.

I decided to use my old Palm Centro for the time being and see if anyone had an Android cell phone I could borrow for a few months. I also decided I would try to take it apart and fix it myself (I do not recommend doing this). There are step-by-step instructions on how to take it apart to fix the LCD screen.

However, I ran into a problem in step 1. I did not have a small enough philips screwdriver. I figured the IT department at work would have this type of tool so I borrowed 1 today. Then my 2nd problem occurred. A screw was in so tight that I was stripping it. I removed 5 out of 6 screws then just started pulling at it. I unscrewed another 6 screws. I took off the casing and the keyboard. Not much to see or do so I put it back together. I’d like to say I magically fixed the darn thing but it is still broken and probably broken more so than before I started messing with it.

271st New Thing - Visited the Space Needle

I was on vacation so I didn't have time to post the last few nights, therefore I'm posting this late as this occurred 1 day ago   (Tues 7/17/12).   We were in the northwest in the Washington State area for a few days so Matt and my 2 Chicago friends were in Seattle and up the Space Needle yesterday. The Space Needle is a tower in Seattle, Washington and is a major landmark of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It was built for the 1962 World's Fair, during which time nearly 20,000 people a day used the elevators, with over 2.3 million visitors in all for the World Fair. The Space Needle is 605 feet high at its highest point and 138 feet wide at its widest point and weighs 9,550 tons. It is built to withstand winds of up to 200 mph and earthquakes of up to 9.1 magnitude. The tower also has 25 lightning rods on its roof to prevent lightning damage. The Space Needle features an observation deck at 520 feet, and a gift shop with the rotating SkyCity resta...

39th New Thing – Donated $1 to Books For Africa

I read an Oprah.com article, 16 Ways to Make an Incredible Impact With Less Than $15 , recently about 16 different organizations you can donate to for as low as a $1 donation or up to a $15. Since it is the holiday season of giving, I decided to donate $1 to Books For Africa . Supposedly $1 will provide 2 books shipped to a classroom in Africa. Access to an education is one of the only opportunities young people have to end the cycle of poverty and attain a better quality of life than previous generations. Books For Africa works to help children who otherwise would not attend school by supplying educational materials to reduce or eliminate education costs. In the wake of Wyclef's accusations (1/3 of $16 million raised went to the charity), I was a little leery of donating but if Oprah says it is a reliable organization, it must be!
