316th New Thing - Tried GU Chomps

GU Energy Labs
I picked up a free sample packet of GU Chomps watermelon flavor somewhere, probably a fitness expo or something. GU Chomps utilize GU Energy Gel's carbohydrates, amino acids, antioxidants and electrolytes in a chewable form. Chomps can be consumed before, during, and right after activity. A 2-serving packet will provide 180 calories and 60 grams of carbohydrates.

What's in it?
  • Carbohydrates - A balance of complex carbs (maltodextrin) and simple carbs (tapioca syrup and cane sugar) as the basis for delivering fast and usable energy.
  • Amino Acids - The GU amino blend is included for added focus, rippin' energy and speedy recovery.
  • Antioxidants - Vitamin C + E, those mighty antioxidants that combat tissue breakdown.
  • Electrolytes - Sodium and potassium to restore electrolyte balance.
  • Caffeine - Some Chomps flavors are caffeinated, some are not. We add caffeine for two reasons: It acts as a stimulant and it can lower the perceived effort.
GU Chomps
It is available in watermelon, cranberry apple, strawberry, blueberry pomegranate, orange and peach tea flavors. I ran 10 miles today and popped one in around mile 6. I'm not a fan of most chews as they are sticky and kinda dry your mouth out after you eat it. But I sucked on these on the side of my mouth like a hard candy. I felt it gave me more energy to finish my run.

271st New Thing - Visited the Space Needle

I was on vacation so I didn't have time to post the last few nights, therefore I'm posting this late as this occurred 1 day ago   (Tues 7/17/12).   We were in the northwest in the Washington State area for a few days so Matt and my 2 Chicago friends were in Seattle and up the Space Needle yesterday. The Space Needle is a tower in Seattle, Washington and is a major landmark of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It was built for the 1962 World's Fair, during which time nearly 20,000 people a day used the elevators, with over 2.3 million visitors in all for the World Fair. The Space Needle is 605 feet high at its highest point and 138 feet wide at its widest point and weighs 9,550 tons. It is built to withstand winds of up to 200 mph and earthquakes of up to 9.1 magnitude. The tower also has 25 lightning rods on its roof to prevent lightning damage. The Space Needle features an observation deck at 520 feet, and a gift shop with the rotating SkyCity resta...

39th New Thing – Donated $1 to Books For Africa

I read an Oprah.com article, 16 Ways to Make an Incredible Impact With Less Than $15 , recently about 16 different organizations you can donate to for as low as a $1 donation or up to a $15. Since it is the holiday season of giving, I decided to donate $1 to Books For Africa . Supposedly $1 will provide 2 books shipped to a classroom in Africa. Access to an education is one of the only opportunities young people have to end the cycle of poverty and attain a better quality of life than previous generations. Books For Africa works to help children who otherwise would not attend school by supplying educational materials to reduce or eliminate education costs. In the wake of Wyclef's accusations (1/3 of $16 million raised went to the charity), I was a little leery of donating but if Oprah says it is a reliable organization, it must be!
