203rd New Thing - Ate Modmarket Catering

I didn't have time to post last night, therefore I'm posting this late as this occurred yesterday (Fri 5/10/12).

I was at my work's photo shoot again today and we ordered food from Modmarket Catering. Modmarket is a quick-serve restaurant that offers daily offers fresh salads, brick oven pizza, gourmet sandwiches, and made-from-scratch soups in 3 locations in Colorado. Founders, Anthony Pigliacampo and Rob McColgan, left successful careers to strike out on their own. Pigliacampo, had his own mechanical design firm, creating everything from medical-device components to outdoor recreational equipment, before he sold the company. McColgan, worked in private wealth management at Goldman Sachs in New York. The 2 decided to join forces on a restaurant venture, choosing Boulder as the launch site. Modmarket’s founders are skillful practitioners of cutting edge restaurant marketing techniques, but one of their most successful campaigns comes from an innovation all their own: using receipts as advertising space. All Modmarket receipts list nutritional information for each item the customer ordered, not only placing the restaurant ahead of the curve on menu labeling but also reinforcing Modmarket’s message: we’re a healthy alternative to other fast casual chains. It is great to hear that individuals working in 1 industry can start a business in an industry they don't have experience in, yet still be successful. Gives me hope for my small business idea.

Our catering from Modmarket included a veggie tray, Bruschetta (roasted garlic, tomato and fresh basil), Farmer Salad (mixed greens, herb roasted chicken, strawberries, feta, almond, corn, champagne vinaigrette), Roman Salad (romaine, homemade croutons, shaved parmesan, cucumber, herb roasted chicken, caesar dressing), sandwich platter, and Popchips. I really enjoyed the Farmer Salad and my 1/2 chicken sandwich. I would definitely go back there.

271st New Thing - Visited the Space Needle

I was on vacation so I didn't have time to post the last few nights, therefore I'm posting this late as this occurred 1 day ago   (Tues 7/17/12).   We were in the northwest in the Washington State area for a few days so Matt and my 2 Chicago friends were in Seattle and up the Space Needle yesterday. The Space Needle is a tower in Seattle, Washington and is a major landmark of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It was built for the 1962 World's Fair, during which time nearly 20,000 people a day used the elevators, with over 2.3 million visitors in all for the World Fair. The Space Needle is 605 feet high at its highest point and 138 feet wide at its widest point and weighs 9,550 tons. It is built to withstand winds of up to 200 mph and earthquakes of up to 9.1 magnitude. The tower also has 25 lightning rods on its roof to prevent lightning damage. The Space Needle features an observation deck at 520 feet, and a gift shop with the rotating SkyCity resta...

39th New Thing – Donated $1 to Books For Africa

I read an Oprah.com article, 16 Ways to Make an Incredible Impact With Less Than $15 , recently about 16 different organizations you can donate to for as low as a $1 donation or up to a $15. Since it is the holiday season of giving, I decided to donate $1 to Books For Africa . Supposedly $1 will provide 2 books shipped to a classroom in Africa. Access to an education is one of the only opportunities young people have to end the cycle of poverty and attain a better quality of life than previous generations. Books For Africa works to help children who otherwise would not attend school by supplying educational materials to reduce or eliminate education costs. In the wake of Wyclef's accusations (1/3 of $16 million raised went to the charity), I was a little leery of donating but if Oprah says it is a reliable organization, it must be!
