217th New Thing - Went to Revel

I'm on vacation so I didn't have time to post the last few nights, therefore I'm posting this late as this occurred 3 days ago (Thurs 5/24/12).
We are in the northeast for a few days so we went to Atlantic City for a few hours on Thurday. First we parked at Trump Plaza and went out to the boardwalk. Then we went to Trump Taj Mahal where I lost $20 in roulette. Roulette is a casino game that players choose to place bets on either a single number or a range of numbers, the colors red or black, or whether the number is odd or even. To determine the winning number and color, the wheel is spun in 1 direction, then spins a ball in the opposite direction around a tilted circular track running around the the wheel. The ball eventually falls on to the wheel and into 1 of 38 colored and numbered pockets on the wheel.
Next we went to the newest casino, Revel. It officially opened May 25, 2012 with 6.2 million square foot on the beachfront on the boardwalk. It is located north of the Showboat Hotel and Casino. Revel is built on a 20-acre site with 1,000 feet of boardwalk frontage. Revel's hotel tower is the tallest structure in Atlantic City and the 2nd tallest in the state of New Jersey at 47 stories. After Revel, we grabbed a bite to eat; a crab cake and fried clams. Next we walked on the beach and played frisbee. Then we went back to Trump Plaza where Matt lost $20 in black jack. Black jack is another casino game where the player is dealt an initial 2 card hand with the option of drawing cards to bring the total value to 21 or less without exceeding it, so that the dealer will lose by having a lesser hand than the player or by exceeding 21.

Later on in the evening, we went to Philadelphia for cheesesteaks at Tony Luke's.

271st New Thing - Visited the Space Needle

I was on vacation so I didn't have time to post the last few nights, therefore I'm posting this late as this occurred 1 day ago   (Tues 7/17/12).   We were in the northwest in the Washington State area for a few days so Matt and my 2 Chicago friends were in Seattle and up the Space Needle yesterday. The Space Needle is a tower in Seattle, Washington and is a major landmark of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It was built for the 1962 World's Fair, during which time nearly 20,000 people a day used the elevators, with over 2.3 million visitors in all for the World Fair. The Space Needle is 605 feet high at its highest point and 138 feet wide at its widest point and weighs 9,550 tons. It is built to withstand winds of up to 200 mph and earthquakes of up to 9.1 magnitude. The tower also has 25 lightning rods on its roof to prevent lightning damage. The Space Needle features an observation deck at 520 feet, and a gift shop with the rotating SkyCity resta...

39th New Thing – Donated $1 to Books For Africa

I read an Oprah.com article, 16 Ways to Make an Incredible Impact With Less Than $15 , recently about 16 different organizations you can donate to for as low as a $1 donation or up to a $15. Since it is the holiday season of giving, I decided to donate $1 to Books For Africa . Supposedly $1 will provide 2 books shipped to a classroom in Africa. Access to an education is one of the only opportunities young people have to end the cycle of poverty and attain a better quality of life than previous generations. Books For Africa works to help children who otherwise would not attend school by supplying educational materials to reduce or eliminate education costs. In the wake of Wyclef's accusations (1/3 of $16 million raised went to the charity), I was a little leery of donating but if Oprah says it is a reliable organization, it must be!
