338th New Thing - Ran a Marathon

I didn't have time to post the last night, therefore I'm posting this late as this occurred yesterday (Sat 9/22/12).
The day finally came. After about 18 weeks of training, I ran the full marathon in the Sports Authority Denver Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series yesterday morning starting and ending in Civic Center Park downtown Denver. The Rock 'n' Roll Marathon Series is a collection of road running events owned and operated by Competitor Group Inc. The series is known for lining race routes with live bands, cheerleaders and themed water stations. There are 29 events in the Rock 'n' Roll Series.
I woke up at 5:45am and ate a blueberry pancake, some almonds, some raisins, and a Clif Crunch Granola Bar (white chocolate macadamia flavor). The marathon began at 7:15am in corrals. I started in corral 5 at about 7:25am. I also took 2 Jelly Belly Sport Beans (berry flavor) to give my body a boost of energy. It was chilly in the morning, about 55F but quickly warmed up. My 1st 8 miles felt fine. Then my knees started hurting, left knee more than right. I pushed through it. Along the course there was Gatorade, water, and GU shots. I also ate a few more sport beans. My half marathon time was pretty good at 2:06:08 but my pace dropped after 13 miles because of the soreness and tiredness. Mile 25 had  a 2 block hill that was pretty challenging. My friend found me and ran the last 2 miles with me across the finish line. My final time was 4:34:06. I'm glad I finished the 26.2 mile run jogging and not crawling to receive my medal. I loaded up with food and drink after I was done. Here is an article about the race and a link to the searchable results.
What did you do today?

47th New Thing - Watched Laverne & Shirley

I watched a classic sitcom today from the 70s, Laverne & Shirley . The show aired on ABC from January 26, 1976, to May 10, 1983 and starred Penny Marshall as Laverne De Fazio and Cindy Williams as Shirley Feeney. They were roommates who worked in a fictitious Milwaukee brewery called "Shotz Brewery". The show was a spin-off from Happy Days, as the two lead characters were originally introduced on that series as acquaintances of Fonzie. I watched Season 7, Episode 22, "Perfidy in Blue" originally aired on May 11, 1982. This episode started out with Shirley looking for Laverne's favorite blue purse that she borrowed and lost. Laverne asks where it is because she would like to use it on her date. Shirley lies and says she hasn't seen it. Shirley then watches TV and daydreams that she is in the TV show and married. Laverne is having an affair with Shirley's husband and Laverne tries to poison Shirley. Shirley pretends she is dead. Shirley wakes up and ...

271st New Thing - Visited the Space Needle

I was on vacation so I didn't have time to post the last few nights, therefore I'm posting this late as this occurred 1 day ago   (Tues 7/17/12).   We were in the northwest in the Washington State area for a few days so Matt and my 2 Chicago friends were in Seattle and up the Space Needle yesterday. The Space Needle is a tower in Seattle, Washington and is a major landmark of the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It was built for the 1962 World's Fair, during which time nearly 20,000 people a day used the elevators, with over 2.3 million visitors in all for the World Fair. The Space Needle is 605 feet high at its highest point and 138 feet wide at its widest point and weighs 9,550 tons. It is built to withstand winds of up to 200 mph and earthquakes of up to 9.1 magnitude. The tower also has 25 lightning rods on its roof to prevent lightning damage. The Space Needle features an observation deck at 520 feet, and a gift shop with the rotating SkyCity resta...
