343rd New Thing - Read Leading Change Why Transformation Efforts Fail

Since I am taking a Sustainability Leadership and Implementation Certificate Course starting this Friday and Saturday, they requested I take read Leading Change Why Transformation Efforts Fail by John P Kotter. The article is about how many major change initiatives (ex boost quality or improve culture) that organizations attempt, fail miserably. One reason may be that many managers don’t realize transformation is a process, not an event. It advances through stages that build on each other. And it takes years. Managers must understand the stages of change to boost chances of a successful transformation.

EIGHT STEPS TO TRANSFORMING YOUR ORGANIZATION

1. Establishing a Sense of Urgency - Examining market and competitive realities
- Identifying and discussing crises, potential crises, or major opportunities
2. Forming a Powerful Guiding Coalition- Assembling a group with enough power to lead the change effort
- Encouraging the group to work together as a team
3. Creating a Vision- Creating a vision to help direct the change effort
- Developing strategies for achieving that vision
4. Communicating the Vision- Using every vehicle possible to communicate the new vision and strategies
- Teaching new behaviors by the example of the guiding coalition
5. Empowering Others to Act on the Vision- Getting rid of obstacles to change
- Changing systems or structures that seriously undermine the vision
- Encouraging risk taking and nontraditional ideas, activities, and actions
6. Planning for and Creating Short-Term Wins- Planning for visible performance improvements
- Creating those improvements
- Recognizing and rewarding employees involved in the improvements
7. Consolidating Improvements and Producing Still More Change- Using increased credibility to change systems, structures, and policies that don’t fit the vision
- Hiring, promoting, and developing employees who can implement the vision
- Reinvigorating the process with new projects, themes, and change agents
8. Institutionalizing New Approaches- Articulating the connections between the new behaviors and corporate success
- Developing the means to ensure leadership development and succession

111th New Thing - Took a Zyrtec

If you recall, I went to the dermatologist to get a skin screening for the 1st time back in December. When I was there, the doctor did a biopsy of 1 of the moles on my back (which came back as normal, by the way). The area was healing pretty well until about 2 weeks ago. The area around the wound started getting bigger instead of smaller and oozing. Therefore, I went back to my doctor to check it out. She said I was having an allergic reaction to something, probably the Neosporin . She gave me some new ointment, Vanos , and said I should take Zyrtec until the area starts to get better. Vanos (fluocinonide) Cream is indicated for the relief of the inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of corticosteroid responsive dermatoses in patients. Best results are seen if used twice per day. Zyrtec (cetirizine) is an antihistamine that reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body. Histamine can produce symptoms of sneezing, itching, watery eyes, and runny nose. Zyrtec can be u...

361st New Thing - Tried on Wedding Dresses

I didn't have time to post the last night, therefore I'm posting this late as this occurred yesterday (Mon 10/15/12). My friend and I went to David's Bridal last night to try on some wedding dresses. I looked on their website a few months ago to get a feel of the type of dresses I like. There are 6 styles: Classic & Traditional, Chic & Modern, Elegant & Luxurious, Glamorous & Dramatic, Destination, and Reception. I like Classic & Traditional the best. There are 5 silhouettes to choose from: A-Line, Ball Gown, Mermaid/Trumpet, Sheath, and Short. I like A-Line the best. I'm considering straps or strapless. It took about 1.5 hours to try on 5 dresses. I liked 2 of the dresses I tried on, both were under $350. My goal is to find one under $200. Here is one of the 'favorites' that I saw online. It is hard to tell if I would or wouldn't like it on myself. What did you do today?
